A new assessment of the completeness of quasar surveys: implications for the luminosity function

چکیده
We apply a simple statistical method (Derenzo & Hildebrand 1969) to estimating the completeness of quasar surveys. It requires that an area has been covered by two or more, preferably different, selection techniques. We use three suitable data sets with separate selections from: variability and UV-excess (170 quasars); objective prism and UV-excess (141 quasars); multicolour and X-ray (ROSAT, 19 quasars). We find that, for selection by UV-excess, the common limit of U − B ≤ −0.35 ± −0.05 leads to losses of ∼ 35%, typically missing low-luminosity (MB ∼> −24.5) quasars, independently of redshift. Systematic incompleteness will therefore affect the new generation of large quasar surveys that select by U − B ≤ −0.35. By correcting for this incompleteness, we find, from the first data set (B < 21.0 and z < 2.2), that the evolution of the quasar luminosity function (LF) is best described by joint luminosity and density evolution. When extrapolated to z = 0, the LF matches that of local Seyfert galaxies better than any previous determination. The LF shows an increase in the number of low-luminosity quasars at low redshifts and of brighter quasars at intermediate redshifts, relative to the LF of Boyle et al. (1990). This result is consistent with models in which quasars fade from an initial bright phase. Subject headings: surveys — quasars: luminosity function — galaxies: Seyfert

Simulating Wide-Field Quasar Surveys from the Optical to Near-Infrared
A number of deep, wide-field, near-infrared surveys employing new infrared cameras on 4m-class telescopes are about to commence. These surveys have the potential to determine the fraction of luminous dust-obscured quasars that may have eluded surveys undertaken at optical wavelengths. In order to understand the new observations it is essential to make accurate predictions of surface densities a...
متن کاملThe quasar fraction in low–frequency selected complete samples and implications for unified schemes
Low-frequency radio surveys are ideal for selecting orientation-independent samples of extragalactic sources because the sample members are selected by virtue of their isotropic steep-spectrum extended emission. We use the new 7C Redshift Survey along with the brighter 3CRR and 6C samples to investigate the fraction of objects with observed broad emission lines – the ‘quasar fraction’ – as a fu...
متن کاملDASTWAR: a tool for completeness estimation in magnitude-size plane
Today, great observatories around the world, devote a substantial amount of observing time to sky surveys. The resulted images are inputs of source finder modules. These modules search for the target objects and provide us with source catalogues. We sought to quantify the ability of detection tools in recovering faint galaxies regularly encountered in deep surveys. Our approach was based on com...
متن کاملSupermassive Black Holes in the Hierarchical Universe: a General Framework and Observational Tests
We present a simple framework for the growth and evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the hierarchical structure formation paradigm, adopting the general idea that quasar activity is triggered in major mergers. In our model, black hole accretion is triggered during major mergers (mass ratio & 0.3) between host dark matter halos. The successive evolution of quasar luminosities follow...
متن کاملEvidence for Merger-Driven Activity in the Clustering of High Redshift Quasars
Recently, a very large clustering length has been measured for quasars at a redshift of z ∼ 4. In combination with the observed quasar luminosity function we assess the implications of this clustering for the relationship between quasar luminosity and dark matter halo mass. Our analysis allows for non-linearity and finite scatter in the relation between quasar luminosity and halo mass, as well ...
